Bearpaw2400 scanner in Ubuntu 11.10 - a better replacement wanted.

When running Kubuntu Natty Narwahl, I was happily using my Mustek/Packard Bell/Bearpaw Diamond 2400 scanner. Moving to Ubuntu 11.10 all I get are error messages - so a decision is needed. Which scanner is simplest to install and gives good results? 11.10 is virtually a plug & play system, and has been superb at identifying printers, so that I would like to have the same service from the scanner. Being UK based, it would be helpful if full details of the scanner you recommend are given. Please, NO 'all-in-one' systems, I have enough printers to last me a lifetime.
Thank you
