What hardware are you using

Are you using a laptop with a wifi-led? If so, check if the led comes on when assigning a static IP to wlan0. Also what's the output of these commands:

1. ifconfig -a
2. lsmod | grep bcm
3. dmesg | tail -n 20

Do you have the windows drivers in your linux filesystem? Ndiswrapper is a method to use windows drivers in linux. You must have the *.sys and *.ini file corresponding to your card and then use ndisgtk to 'register' the driver.

Can you `ls /lib/firmware`

Also I think you just need to follow the instructions at http://www.omattos.com/node/6 which shows you how to download the drivers and where to put them. Then the kernel should load them automatically for you

P.S on gentoo there is a bcm-firmware package, there maybe something simular on your distrobution.

Edit, also this site is very useful:

Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

That particular NIC is know for its difficulties when using it with Linux. The only way I ever got it to work is using ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers.

A couple of months ago I participated in a thread to help out a user with the same problem. This is the thread in question, I'm sure you'll get yours working the same way too.

Kind regards,

Eric

thanks this got the driver working without even having to use ndiswrapper!!!!
but now my internet connection drops almost every minute to 5 minutes
i cant even install the latest updates without dropping
i would have to use windows 7 just to download and update it
(this is fustrating)

Ok brilliant, seems like you got the firmware and figured it out! Thats good progress.

When it drops do you get any errors such as from dmesg?

run
Code:
dmesg
to see...

It could be your IP is expiring rather rapidly (unlikely but possible) or something else completely.

How have you gone about connecting it to your network? Do you have any config files with the settings in?

You're using Ubuntu, right? Theres a nice application called jockey-gtk or jockey-kde depending on your choice, which should start automatically after the first boot if needed, that shows you proprietary drivers you may need. I installed with one click the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and everything worked perfectly: I'm able to see available networks with networkmanager applet, connect using encryption (WEP passphrase or HEX,WPA etc) and it never drops.
Let me know

You just need to get the updated firmware, follow the url that is linked in your dmesg log. Once you've got this your card should boot properly.
