Basic help with swapping graphics cards (nVidia to ATI)

A very basic question this:
I'm replacing an nVidia GFX card with an ATI one - is there any specially uninstall process I have to run before doing the hardware switch, or can I just go ahead and make the change then install the new drivers afterwards (like in Windows)?

Make sure you boot into runlevel 3 after swapping the graphics cards the first time. Remove the old driver if need be and install the new driver. Consult your distribution forums for the exact details before starting.

The basic rules apply, you need to install the ATi Linux drivers. Plenty of threads here on linuxquestions explaining how, just look in the slackware distribution forum.
