Basic Doubt of Ubuntu Installation

I had already installed Ubuntu in many occasion without using a swap space and root partition [ I guess I didnt understand the root partition concept , kindly forgive me]

But whenever I install I used to choose the location to get install as '/', is this same as root partition .?

Kindly help me to solve these doubts , I would be grateful ,if anybody points to me a link which I can learn more on root , boot and swap partitions

If you choose /
the whole system will be installed on 1 partition.
/ is the root of the filesystem.
You can however choose to create a seperate partition for
/
/boot
/home
swap...
