Backpack Cdrom on Mepis

I just installed the newest version of Simply MEPIS on my Dell lattitude CPi laptop. I have a Backpack CD-RW drive, that seems to use scsi (that's what was detected as on windows XP). Anyway, I know that the drive works on that laptop, because I used it regularly with Windows. I posted about this at the mepis lovers forums, and people said if I had the deviece plugged in and turned on at boot time, the 2.6.7 kernel should detect it and add it to fstab. No luck. I had a cd in the drive and everything. I tried to load the pcd modual manually, and it said "invalid paremeters". (it uses the parallell port) So, what do I do? THe only howto I can find online is for Redhat 6.2

Is someone going to help me or what?

backpack on SuSE 9.1

I'm trying to get my backpack to run, but mine's connected with USB. It shows in my list of hardware when I scan it. Maybe the best way to access it would be to mount it like any other USB stprage and supply an argument for the cd-rom filetype. I don't know, that's just an idea from a real newb. I'm unable to do it myself.
