Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Backend driver for Canon/HP scanners

Hi folks,

FC5_64

I'm considering to purchase either CanoScan 4200F (preferrable) or HP Scanjet 4370. But they are unsupported on SANE

http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfg...EWLETT-PACKARD

I have been searching "The sane-devel Archives"
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/

and could not find available Backend driver for them.

Can any folk on the forum shed me somelight. TIA

B.R.

Stay away from Canon. They don't release the interface information needed to create proper drivers. I had a Canoscan 5000F myself that's still unusable more than 3 years after I bought it.

I'm not sure about HP scanners, but I've heard they have pretty good printer support. I have no personal experience with HP, however, so I really don't know.

As always though, the devil's in the details, and one model of hardware may work while the next number up doesn't. It's probably a good idea to stay away from any unit that doesn't ALREADY have drivers available for it.
