B85 chipset & SATA port multipliers?

I had thought that port multiplier support wasn't an issue any more, at least with common SATA chipsets. However, I just got a new motherboard with the B85 chipset (ASRock B85M-ITX) and I've not had any luck getting either the eSATA port or the internal SATA ports to detect the port multiplier in a Mediasonic enclosure that has been working fine on another ASRock board for years. ASRock support responded with a terse "this board does not support port multipliers." Is this a restriction of the chipset? I've not had any luck finding any discussion of recent Intel chipsets and their support (or lack thereof) for port multipliers.
