Awe64 on Mandrake 9.1

hi guys, hows it going?
im trying to get my sound to work on mandrake 9.1.
after the install i was advised to run sndconfig, so i did.
it detected my soundcard correctly: soundblaster awe64.
but when im in gnome, and i want to play a mp3/a game, i dont have any sound
i tried recompiling my kernel with awe32/64 support, but i could only keep it a module, not always loaded.
any advice for me?

The soundcard worked under the sndconfig test, but not after Gnome was loaded? Uhmm... its Mandrake, so its ALSA drivers. They're muted by default... I'd hate to mention that, but have you loaded the multimedia mixer to see if the settings are all muted?

Cheers,
