Question Automounting harddrive fails ?

Hi there,

Yesturday i made a terrible mistake which resulted in me having to set back my device (rockpi 4b) from a backup. I did:
Code:
mv ~/* ~/downloads
rather than
Code:
mv ./* ~/downloads
I've set up the installation from a working backup. But for some reason the auto mounting of my external hard drive doesn't work anymore.

The problem is when I enable the UUID of the hard drive (removing the # in front of it in fstab) my system does not load correctly. I can access the system with a mouse but the volume isn't mounted everywhere in /media and I can't access it over ssh.

When i disable the UUID line in fstab the system runs normally and i can access the system over ssh. I can then simply mount the drive when i double click the drive in nautilus. I of course want the system to auto mount the drive, but that doens't work. Anyone have an idea how i can maybe fix this ?

Some useful input is displayed below. This is the input when auto-mounting is disabled in fstab.

Thank you in advance!!

I think I've setup everything correctly:

Code:
cat /etc/fstab
UUID=e9fb6ad8-1bc1-4c64-aef4-401780935e3e / ext4 defaults,noatime,nodiratime,commit=600,errors=remount-ro 0 1
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,nosuid 0 0
#UUID=B0561F00561EC74E /media/kist ntfs-3g permissions,auto 0 0

Just curious, but why are you not mounting it by the label?
I would.

Hi there,

I didnt even know that was possible. I chose UUID over Label because i think its more permanent ? I gave the drive the label Kist so i guess that could not be as permanent as an UUID.

Furthermore i think the problem lies somewhere in fstab ? But as far as i see its correct ?

This is not a "terrible mistake" at all and I wonder if the restoring from backup was necessary at all.
'~' resolves to $HOME, so you moved your $HOME into the downloads folder. Should have been easy to fix.

permissions is not a valid mount option. Try

UUID=B0561F00561EC74E /media/kist ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

After a while the drive disconnects and i cant access the drive.

Strange! Any idea how this can be caused ?

Have you been using the USB drive connected to the Rock Pi for awhile?

What is the make/model of USB drive?

It’s a RockPi 4b with 128 GB storage

The drive is a seawater HDD with 4 TB and external power. I think it has been running for like half a year before this ?

Code:
T: Bus=06 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=5000 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 3.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 9 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0bc2 ProdID=3323 Rev=01.00
S: Manufacturer=Seagate
S: Product=Expansion+ Desk
S: SerialNumber=NA8M1NJK
C: #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
It also seems that after a while when this happens the board becomes unresponsive. For example i cant connect over ssh anymore.
So maybe its unrelated? <aye there’s just some process causing a high system load ?

Fixed it ! apparently the non responding was because my plex server was scanning and the process of ssh was lower in the three of importance. Now that the scanning is finished everything works fine!
