audiophile usb recognized by alsa, but

I have slackware 11 (2.4 kernel) running on an old presario 700. I'm trying to hook up this fairly decent m-audio audiophile usb soundcard to the laptop. I think I have the card configured via alsa ok, but the thing doesn't work. Here are some details:

1. Some module info.
Quote:
presario@presario:~$ cat /proc/modules

2. Evidence that the card is recognized, I think:

Quote:
presario@presario:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [rev50 ]: VIA686A - VIA 82C686A/B rev50
VIA 82C686A/B rev50 with AD1886 at 0x1000, irq 5
1 [tm ]: USB-Audio - Audiophile USB (tm)
M-Audio Audiophile USB (tm) at
usb-00:07.2-1, full speed

presario@presario:~$
3. Some disturbing mixer info...

Quote:
presario@presario:~$ cat /proc/asound/card1/oss_mixer

4. Note that this card (and other usb cards) doesn't have a mixer interface, hence:
Quote:
presario@presario:~$ alsamixer -c 1
No mixer elems found
5. Lastly, here is my modules.conf:

Quote:
presario@presario:~$ cat /etc/modules.conf
# --- ALSA configuration

alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx

options snd-via82xx index=0
options snd-usb-audio index=1
#--- Keep modules from being autocleaned
add options -k snd-card-0
add options -k snd-card-1
#--- ALSA configuration END
Any alsa wizards out there? Thanks in advance for your help.

A small update:

I tried a test on a raw audio file and I got some output--at double speed and with lots of hiss. I think this shows that the card is recognized by alsa. I used this command:

aplay -D hw:1,0 -c2 -t raw -r48000 -fS24_3BE test.raw

I took it off of

/usr/doc/alsa-driver-1.0.11/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Audiophile-Usb.txt

Who knew I had this specific information on my own harddrive? Pays to look at /usr/doc/...

Does anyone think that I would be better off with a 2.6 kernel in order to gain better usability with this usb sound card?
