Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

audio problem with Thinkpad T30 / SUSE 9

Hi,
I've just installed SUSE 9 on my Thinkpad T30. It all seemed to go OK, except I've got no audio. I've tried the limited number of things I can think of, including googling my problem. Anyone help?
lspci output:

stinkpad:~ # /sbin/lspci

02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 42)

It's SUSE 9 with the following kernel, straight from the FTP install.
stinkpad:~ # uname -r
2.4.21-144-default

suseplugger shows it installed fine, as does YaST. The YaST "test" button gives no output with all volume knobs turned to 10. My user is in the audio group. The volume up button on the top of the laptop has been pressed many times.Audio was working fine under XP and RH8.

Any idea of where I could start to track it down?
