Audio over nvidia card 8500GT spdif from sound blaster
 

I currently have a setup with a Soundblaster audigy RX and a XFX Nvidia 8500 GT. The particular graphics card I have does not have HDMI but ive seen posts saying it is possible to send video and audio over a dvi->hdmi cable if you connect some spdif pins. I am not sure exactly where to look for those pins and how to configure it inside the OS.

You cant send audio over a DVI cable, there are no audio pins.

You can get a DVI + SPIF to HDMI converter..but they tend to cost $40+, you can get a newer video card with HDMI for less than that. As an added bonus, a newer card like a GT610 would be faster, use les power, and output less heat.

Actually solved this I originally thought my mobo
didnt have the spdif pins but they were just obscured by my heatsink.
The cable does go from dvi->hdmi I dont know if there is
anything special going on inside the cable but with the
motherboard connected to the graphics card I get audio via the
dvi port on the graphics card.

mikeandike22, which pins did you plug the spdif cable to on the video card? I have the same card and there are only 2 connectors. One (2 pin) that has a white plastic around it on the bottom of the card (near the MB) and another 2 pins at the top of the card. Neither have any writing around them so I cannot identify which one is what. My card does not have a fan, just a heat sink, so I figure the one with the white plastic is for an optional fan. I assume it's the 2 random pins on the top, but I want to be sure before I connect anything to it. Also, which pin is the SPDIF and which one is ground? Thanks for your help.

My connector is hooked up to the top pins. However on my card the pins
are vertical and the ground is the one closest to the bottom. It may be different
on yours.
