Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

audio interface/musician...Linux compatibility

So it hit me after the fact that my new laptop (Dell Latitude E6540) does not have any sort of line in jack (I am a musician, and occasionally would like to hook my guitar/bass into the computer to record some music). So, I'm thinking of going with some sort of USB audio interface. Not anything super fancy or extreme, just something that will work. Either thinking just a basic audio interface like this:

OR

upgrading my old small mixer to a USB one:

Some options I am throwing around. I just want to make sure I won't run into compatibility issues or the device not working with Linux. Anybody have experience with anything like this?
