audio cd not recognized

for a while, i've been unable to play/rip audio cds. i'm using ubuntu gutsy with a memorex usb dvd writer. i am able to burn cd and dvd data, and read dvd/cd data, but not audio. the system recognizes audio with my ide drives. also, i have been able to use this drive with audio cd's in the past, though i have no idea what distro i was using the last time it worked. here's some dmesg output:

Code:
[67168.507192] scsi 4:0:0:0: CD-ROM Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWlD2 JWS6 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0

So play the media, one does not need for audio CD's to be mounted(for reading data CD's only) in order to play them on inserted in the drive. You have a number of players available (mplayer, xmms, xine for example). In some cases one may have to manually set the player to play audio CD's digitally but that is not hard to do. Just point the player to the USB drive and play

I'm sorry if this is just to simple of an idea for you. It is not anyone's fault that Ubuntu gutsy does not automatically handle this for you.

not quite sure what to make of your post. i didn't say i was blaming gutsy. if it was as simple as inserting the cd and having it play, i wouldn't be posting a question. i'm not trying to mount the audio cd. none of the players/ripping programs recognize that there is an audio cd inserted; they state that there isn't a cd in the drive (see last line of dmesg output). this seems to be a problem with linux not recognizing the audio cd, rather than the frontend. this persists even if i point the programs to the correct address (/dev/scd2 in my case).
