Audigy LS Strange issues
 

I have an Audigy LS on a Slackware 10.2 (updated to lastest patches, running 2.4.x kernel). The full story as follows.

I hooked up the sound card, configured the kernel, everything worked. A few days later, I changed my power supply from a 350W to 500W. Suddenly the sound card just emits static under Linux, works fine under win2k sp4.

The strange part comes in here. If I cold boot the box straight to Slack, during the boot process when the ALSA settings are loaded, the speakers begin to emit static (Logitech 5.1 speakers). However, if I boot to windows first and then do a warm reboot to Slack, the sound works fine. I am thinking that I need to set something in the bios, perhaps the P&P OS settings? Anyone have any ideas why this may be happening?

I'm having some similar problems with my value audigy card. I've had the same problem on slackware on right now, mandriva 2006.

I've got lots of really loud distorted static coming out of my speakers. But if I turn everything right down in aumix (not so soft that its OFF but just so it's up 1 "notch" on the scale) I can get some meaningfull sound at least. It still crackles when the mp3 or dvd sound gets louder though.

This box doesnt have Windows on it so I can't try your warm booting trick but i'm running an Antec true 380 watt supply, the sound system Im using is ALSA and its an Audigy 1 Value card.

I was wondering if you've been able to get stereo sound from your card?

I just found something, according to www.alsa-project.org, my series 1 audigy card uses module snd-ca0106 which is known to cuase distortion problems on versions of alsa earlier than 1.0.11rc2.

then look for Sound Blaster Audigy SE and it will tell you how to install it.

I'm gonna give it a go now, wish me luck. . .

I am having the exact same problems with Mandriva 2006. I also have Win2k on the same system, but rebooting doesn't help. Also, I have installed Ubuntu and Kubuntu on this system and the sound worked perfectly. SUSE 10.1 wouldn't play the sound at all. Then, I tried Mandriva 2006 and nearly hurt my ears from the insane white noise (static) emitted from my Peavey amp I'm using to power my sound. Not to mention it scared the living crap out of me. I have also tried loading other drivers (snd-emu10k1 [ALSA], emu10k1 [OSS], unknown [OSS], & snd-emu10k1x [ALSA]), but none of thise fixed the problem. Just pure annoying static. My on-board audio is disabled. HardDrake detects the card as SB Audigy LS with driver snd-ca0106. The box my soundcard came in says SoundBlaster Audigy SE. I will look into the link posted above and see what I can come up with. If anyone else knows of a fix, please post this. I'm tired of installing distribution after distribution to see which ones my sound card will work with. The sound card is the only thing keeping me from settling with Linux comfortably. I will go back to Kubuntu if I have to, but the problem is that it is a VERY thin distribution....if you don't have an Internet connection (like me). Same goes with Ubuntu. Any help is much appreciated.

I checked the link above and found my sound card in the list. I was rather upset when I saw the following next to it:

"Digital/Analog input does not work yet. Needs more development work."

This totally sucks! I need analog input! :mad: Well, I guess I either have to be patient or see if possibly Ubuntu has this fixed, since the output worked perfectly in it. I'm a podcaster and recording musician (not on a professional level by any means). So, input is kinda required. However, this is one of the MANY areas that Apple computers are SUPERIOR. I'll always have an Apple because they just simply rock, but I am a Linux fan at heart. I want my Win2k partition to go the way of the dodo, but sound and gaming are hindering me (unfortunately). Although Cedega is proving to be very promising.

Well, if anyone comes up with anything on this sound issue, please let us know.

Actually I got audio input to work. Since I am dual booting it's kind of a cheat. Boot into windows, start your phono player (or what have you). Turn on SPDIF (unmute) and then turn on Line In, I have no clue why you need to turn on SPDIF first. You should hear music, as long as you warm reboot into Linux, all should work fine.

I love Mac's too, but this isn't necessarily an issue with Linux. I tried to upgrade the sound drivers on the windows side and Audigy couldn't detect the right card. I am leaning a little more towards Audigy then linux in this case.
