Audigy LS - no sound (alsa 1.0.6rc2 installed)

Hello,

I have a little problem with my sound card Audigy LS. I used the Mandrake 10.0.
I had installed Alsa 1.0.6rc2 to have the driver from the audigy LS.
The installation of alsa is OK, but I can hear no sound (I had check the alsamixer and put all to maximum).
And when I go to HardDrake and want to launch the configuration tool, I have this message :
'the driver "snd-0" isn't on the list' (I have the message in French, I had translate it).
And the same message for the audio controler integrated to my motherboard (VIA KT 400).

I have put the jack on the green output of my sound card --> no sound.
I have try all the other outputs --> no sound, excepted with the red one : I can hear system noise and with far, the music (but only with Totem, not with XMMS)

lspci give this answer :

It looks like you still have onboard sound enabled.
Try to disable it in BIOS and try again, with Kmix or alsmixer.

BTW, I will presume draksound does not know 'snd-audigyls' module at all, as it is not updated for ALSA 1.0.6rc* (Mandrake 10 is still using ALSA 1.0.2c).

sure,

restart your computer... as soon as the first info screen comes up, hit "Del" key (some computers will list an optional key such as F4 for "options" or bios... if you can't find it try this URL: http://aroundcny.com/technofile/texts/tec020203.html ).

you will be presented with some Bios control menus. you are mainly interested in the 3rd or 4th menu, should have a name such as: "Peripheral Setup" -or- "Integrated Peripherals" or some such thing. Open this menu, and find the integrated audio, midi, etc. Using the arrow keys, highlight each one, hit "Enter" and you will be given a menu to select "disable" for each (some systems you might have to hit +/- or PgDn/PgUp etc to toggle between options).

Hope this is of some help, i'm not exactly wide awake, especially considering the time.

Oh, and Kudos on getting involved in Linux!!! It can be a bit frustrating/difficult in the beginning, but it is one of the most rewarding computing endeavours. In no time you will be an advanced computer user.

Good Luck
Pres

Thank you very much !

I now know how to access my BIOS.
I find only the line AC'97 AUDIO. I have enabled it.
And I restart my computer, and check the alsamixer, but no progress with this.
I have also no sound with my loudspeakers when I put the jack on the green output,
and a little sound of music around the system noise when I put the jack on the red output.
I sure I can do something to change that :-) but I really need help.
Normally alsa.1.0.6rc.2 is well installed. Must I "reinstalled" all alsa ? (do configure; make; make install ?)
Say me if I have to check some file content and send you to know how to do.

I must disconect some time, we have a storm here....

Thank you in advance for help.

See you

If you are trying to get AudigyLS to work, you need to disable it.

then do you still get an error message when you boot linux?

I just restart my computer and I have also the same message.
And at the linux launch, I have just time to see this line :

I'm sorry, I don't arrived to read all. I will say you more in end of journey because I must go to work now.

See you soon.

some changes....

Now, I have installed Alsa1.0.6 (drivers, lib and utils).
I can lauch alsamixer and umute the different channels.
But now, I have a different booting message (I have disable AC'97 in the Bios as Present recommendation) :

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I can hear very bad sound (with system noises) when I tested it in desktop configuration, sound system (I translated my french overview)
I try with OSS , I can hear the test.
I try then with ameliored sound demon, I can alsa hear the test.
I try with Alsa --> I have the previous message

What can I do to open default and to hear music without the noises ?

Thanks very much

Have you solved your problem ? I'm having problems using my Audigy LS, too, but I'm on Slackware, using home-compiled 2.6.7 kernel.

You won't like this, but the reason you can't hear any sound or it has alot of background noise is because you the second version of the Audigy LS. The AudigyLS driver was made using the first version, and unfortunitly although they are both AudigyLS' they differ enough that this driver WILL not work except for digital output and mic input. If you don't know how to get digital cords, look it up. Also the OSS driver also only supports Digital Output for this sound card as well.
