Unhappy Audigy 2 - no sound

This seems to be a common problem, BUT I can't find a solution ...

My Audigy 2 won't produce sound (and yes, I turned up the mixers). I'm runing SuSE 8.1, which uses ALSA. I've upgraded emu10k1 to the newest version (which supports Audigy2s) (the CVS version to be clear), and upgraded ALSA to the latest release as well (0.9.1).

lsmod indicates that snd-emu10k1 (and a bunch of other snd- things) have been loaded. When I boot I am told onscreen that snd-emu10k1 has loaded.

If I try to manually modprobe emu10k1 (shouldn't be needed, but I am trying anything that MIGHT make a difference), I get the following message:

linux:/home/dave # modprobe emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

huh?

If I try to run emu-script I get SOUND_MIXER_PRIVATE3: Input/output error.

And I thought I knew sound back when I was using windows ....

Check the permissions on /dev/audio*, dsp*, midi* and mixer*.
