ATI X1650PRO PCIe card
 

I just installed ubuntu 7.04 onto my tower a couple of months ago. So far so good. The tower has a AMD64 athlon single core. It came with the 200X radeon integrated graphics. I bought a X1650PRO Radeon card to fit into my PCIe slot. I downloaded the latest drivers from ATI as well used Envy to due the installation automatically. The new card only comes up with a black screen in linux. I can navigate using the commands as if I were in a terminal, but there are no graphics. If I remove the add on card then my integrated card puts out a signal and runs just fine. It's been suggested to me to look into the BIOS and check out the slots and cards. Does anyone else have suggestions about why my integrated card would work but no the PCIe seeing how they are both ATI?

Well, the blank screen is an inevitability with cards from the ATI1x00 series. I can't count the times I saw it while I was still using a 1600. My guess is either your xorg.conf isn't using the fglrx driver or the driver was simply misconfigured.

I've went into the bios and made the PCIe slot the video slot. I am still getting the error that fglrx : no matching device section instance (busID 1:0:0) as well as fglrx : no matching device section instance (busID 1:0:1) and finally No devices detected Is there a way around this that is reasonable or do I just need to get an invidia card?

No, you don't need to get an Nvidia card. ATI was working well enough for me, even though I sometimes found it "a bit" challenging to get it running; what really drove me to the nvidia camp was the absence of any ATI drivers for Solaris and FreeBSD.

This is the last one I used before I made the jump to nvidia and it worked really well (I recommend the "manual way"). Take it slowly, don't skip a single thing.
