Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

ATI X1600 Driver

Hi all.

Maybe I am the only one, who posts 2 threads in 5 minutes

My question will not be about installing the driver. I have successfully installed, at least it says so. I have downloaded the driver from ATI and installed it.

However, although I am editing xorg.conf file, I cannot get the resolution at 1280x800 just like in my XP. Meanwhile, can it be a problem to set the default bit to 32 instead of 24. Because, I tried once and the maximum resolution was 800x 600.

Anyway, I need your help to set my desktop to that resolution. I really hate seeing the desktop and applications such as Firefox as if they were attacking from the screen

Thanks,

Ismail

Sometimes, screen resolution options are disabled because your monitor does not support them. Are you using the same monitor as on XP? What distro are you using?

BTW: If you think 800*600 is bad, try 640*480 with 16 bit colour. The only thing I can say about it is: Agh! My Eyes!

First, you need the monitor settings to be correct, according to YOUR monitor.
This is my monitor settings:
Quote:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "LapTop"
HorizSync 31.5 - 64.3
VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0
EndSection
Vendor and Model name (if you have them) are not important, but Horizontal and Vertical refresh rates are important to know what resolutions are possible.

Then comes the Screen section, here's mine:
Quote:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "LapTop"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Most of this probably looks like what you've got in your xorg.conf file, but my guess is that you have incorrect or default values for vertical and horizontal rates.

It's been some time since I configured Xorg, so I'm not sure, but I seem to remember trying 32bit display as well... without success. So stick to 24bit.

As you might see, I've got several Modes. Xorg will try the left one first, if that ain't working, it'll try the next one...and the next one...

Hope this helps?
