ATI Radeon 9800 Pro SUSE 9.3....... HELP!!!!

Ok, I have no idea what to do..... I have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro card in SUSE 9.3 with a AMD Athlon processor..... ie 32 bit i586 or whatever it would be. So HOW do I get the card to work and the 3D acceleration to work?! I've tried all kinds of stuff, the .run file from ATI, the yast installation of the fglrx drivers... I've done it in init 3 and init 5 modes... I guess I have 3d acceleration because all the 3d games and openGL screensavers work but it still says I have no acceleration available for this card in the hardware manager. Also it gives me errors telling me I can't use the device in a multihead environment.... I dont have a multihead environment, only one monitor! At least I think thats what it is referring to.. Please help me out!! Thanks!!!

You will be doing a lot of reading and more than likely compiling you first kernel if you want your card to work. I have a very similar setup but I'm using Slackware. My only suggestion is to read and SEARCH the forum for relatedthreads as there are a lot. Check out this one to start:

If you don't want to go through the process give SimplyMEPIS a try. It is Debian based and is the only distro that I know of that will configure your card for you during the install process. If that doesn't sound like an option for you then the only thing to do is Read and Search. Good luck. If you are new to Linux and have to have 3D acceleration I would go with SimplyMEPIS to help you get used to linux before going with another distro and attacking this issue. There is one other option I forgot about.... get an Nvidia card from what I have read they work effortlessly (compared to ATI cards) with linux.
