ATI Radeon 9800 and Fedora Core 1 - no 3d Acceleration

I'm running Fedora Core 1 with a Radeon 9800.

I have a GUI and all just fine, but I'm using Mesa rendering.

I got the .rpm of their drivers and did everything according to (ati.com/support/infobase/linuxhowto-ati.html - why can't I post URLs? Stupid) their instructions. They don't have a precompiled interface for my kernel (2.4.22-1.2174), so I had to compile one. I installed kernel-source, made the symlink /usr/src/linux -> /usr/src/linux-2.4 -> /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2174.nptl, and ran /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/make.sh

That worked fine, it told me to go up a directory and run make_install.sh; I did, the only warning being that the propreitary module would taint the kernel, and it told me to run fglrxconfig, which I did (that makes and XF86Config file). The default is XF86Config-4; I tried both that and just XF86Config, both times when I startx and fglrxinfo it says that I'm using Mesa rendering, and I have no hardware acceleration.

In my XF86Config file, glx is enabled, everything seems right, and it is definitely being used (when I change its res, it changed X's res).

I got the suggestion of using xf86cfg, but I don't seem to have it in /usr/X11R6/bin

Anything I'm doing wrong, or not doing?

Thanks.

I don't know what can be your problem, as for what you're telling, you're doing everything right. I have a strange issue also with the drivers: i have to reboot the X server for having 3D accel. First time I boot into gdm, i got no 3D accel, but if i reset it (cntrl+alt+backspace) the i got 3D accel. I really cannot say why is that, but i thought reading your post that can be a similar situation.

Hope this helps (although is not that much info :( )
