ATI radeon 9000 mobile. proprietary driver help.

I have installed the ati proprietary driver for ati radeon M9 and my framerate is pitifully slow

965 frames in 5.0 seconds = 193.000 FPS
1083 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.600 FPS

before I was getting over 1000 fps. When I use fglrxinfo as suggested by the ati guys it says:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.1)

the "opengl vendor string" should say that it was made by ati but its not.
the reason Why I changed to this driver is because maya would not display any vertices in XORG 6.8 but now it does with the ati driver and the frame rate sucks.
I changed the xf86-config file that fglrxconfig made into xorg.conf as well. (not sure why --saw it on the net but whatever)

can anyone help?

i say, don't use ATI's drivers, i have a ATI Radeon 9200 and ATI's drivers will NOT work, in that, it does not do direct rendering ... which is the whole point of getting a video card with 3D support!!!! .. i tried for days to get ATI's driver working .. then with no hitch, the open source drivers worked with no possible problem.

also, just to point out, you need "direct rendering" on, this means the card will do 3D accelertation, right now for you, its off, so the CPU does all the rendering which gives you lower frame rates (and bad 3D game support)

for my card, the open source drivers that come with xfree/Xorg work fine (about 500-600 FPS)
