ATI opensource driver issues

I have a somewhat older box, with an ATI Radeon 9800 SE card in it. It's running slack 64 13.1, and prior to research I thought I could install the last proprietary driver for this card. I cannot install the proprietary driver, because the OS is too new, and the driver is too old. Anyway I still need Direct Rendering for this card so I can run xbmc.

The radeon driver came installed with slackware, but also came broken for my card. I think this is the error that causing all my problems:
Code:
(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols.
Here is part of my Xorg log (it's too long for the board):

Any thoughts as to what is causing problems with glx?

Don't use a full-fledged Xorg config file, Xorg 1.7.7 doesn't need one except in special circumstances (like using a proprietary driver). First try without one and see if it auto-configured OK. If so, add only the sections that pertain to the extra video card ports if those are not auto-detected as well.

Ahh! And your video card doesn't support modesetting. Thus you need to add nomodeset=1 to your boot line in lilo (or grub if you use that).

Grr. Memory is playing tricks on me. :-) The correct boot line is "nomodeset" or "radeon.modeset=0"

Alright I added this to my lilo.conf:
Code:
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/sda1
  label = Linux
  read-only
  append="nomodeset"
I don't have any other boot options, and never have, so there's a good chance I screwed that up. Also I moved my xorg.conf to a different location (so it won't use a config file at all). The radeon driver still loaded, and all the errors and warning persist, exactly the same. Any thoughts?

Edit: oh yeah I also ran lilo -v (no errors) after editing the conf file, and rebooted.

Hmm... Perhaps the proprietary driver overwrote part of the GL libraries. Try reinstalling all the MESA packages, to be in the safe side.

I reinstalled mesa and all the xf86 packages via gslapt, then rebooted. Same old problems and same errors / warnings. Any thoughts?

Solved the problem. Found this post: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ri-too-804172/ which told me that fglrx rewrites some xorg files, so I reinstalled all the xorg packages, restarted x and all works fine.

For my part I have an ATI Radeon 9600SE in Debian Linux that I installed recently and it did a lot of blank screens on me when the card was sollicitated.
Sometimes just scrolling in a terminal seemed to bring the graphic processor to reset.
I use grub and I put the nomodeset in the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" and that solved the problem.
