Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

ATI fireGL drivers messing with my Consoles

This is a repost of previous post:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=43085

I got no response, so I guess no one could understand my gibberish. So I'll try again in a little more detail.

I got a new computer in December.

AMD XP2000+
256 DDR PC2700
Gigabyte 7vax w/dual bios (sounded cool)
WD 40G HD ATA100
ATI TV-Wonder VE

Now for my problem. From advice of a linux friend (like there are others), I purchased an ATI RADEON 8500VE. This was right after ATI released there GL drivers, so I thought great should be easy like NVIdia's (2 cards in my house run on NVIDIA). Another plus for ATI is that it has the standard VGA (HD15) connector, a DVI and svideo -out. With a $10 converter - I can change it to a dual-head card. COOL right?

Mandrake, and Suse both install great. Everything works, even OpenGL. But, I'm a little greedy, glxgears running with the mese GL libraries give me 210 fps, and I want more. So I download the ATI drivers. Intallation not too bad, but documentation SUCKS. I ran there fglrxconfig, and things look GREAT (glxgears 2180+).

This is my problem. I go to restart my screen and I can't read anything. The screen is all messed up. System reboots, and the system loader (Aurora replacement, don't know name) looks fine, and everything. Log in, looks good. Do a ctrl-alt-f1 console is all screwed up like during shut-down.

Question 1. Anyone else seeing this? I can't be the only one with this problem.

Question 2. Any clues on a fix? XF86Config-4 hacks? Anything?

Question 3. The command to do a screen capture during install, will that work while in console mode? What was it again?

Please help, virtual consoles are really cool
and I use them a lot (at least I used to),

Pete
