ati fglrx driver x1600pro problems (black at boot x)

I'm running slackware 12.0, with Xorg7.2. My videocard is an ati x1600pro 512mb agp.
My problem is that after installing the ATI Proprietary driver and after the command startx the system hangs and the screen become black. Even alt+ctrl+del doesn't work, only alt+print screen+b works to restart my computer.
If I check the resolution, with the status button, it says 1024x768@ 85Hz. Thats the resulotion and refreshrate I wanted.

The only way to use my system is with the standard vesa driver, at 60Hz.

Some notes:
- I've tried many versions of ati's drivers
- On slackware 11.0 everything "worked", nice resolution and refresh rate, but ofcourse a bad score by glxgears.
- I've seen other posts wich says you must comment load 'extmod', but this doesn't work for me.

I hope someone can help me with this...

If this is a laptop with an external svga port - try switching the screen over.

... hmmm... not a happy card.

... you're not the only one for whom an upgrade blacks out the screen.

with the drivers on the cd, windows will boot into a black screen. basically, it will hang after the POST tests
...also bad with windows.

There is some indication that it matters how you installed the driver -- but you installed from the ATI tarball right? You recompiled for the new kernel right?

yes, I installed the drivers by just running the *.run file.
I use the 2.6.21.5-smp kernel (slackware 12.0 standard).

I've seen someone with ubuntu, which had also a black screen at start of x, but he can login and can use his complete OS, but my problem is that slackware crashes after startx.

By the way I haven't a laptop, I use a dell dimension 8300 (it's a desktop)

The problem is that a x1600 isn't supported by the 'ati' or 'radeon' driver from x11.

The driver doesn't work, but thanks for your help.

It WORKS!!!

The new october drivers from ati are working. There were probably some compatibility problems.
It's even possible to have composite turned on and the drivers working.

With glxgears i get a score of a bout 3600 FPS
