ATI drivers
 

Hi, Im new to these forums and new to linux. My mates been moaning at me for ages to try linux so I am and I need a bit of help. Ive got a ATI X1950 Pro video card and when I install ubuntu I can see the desktop and stuff but when I move web pages up and down its very choppy. Is there specific drivers or configurations I need? Ive looked on the ATI website but they only do linux drivers for up to the x1900 series. Has anyone got a 1950 series card and solved this problem? Or does anyone know where to get something to fix it?

Someones got to be using a 1950 series card with some form of linux.

The x1900 "series" would include the x1950 I think.....from a hardware point.

Try it. What's the worst that could happen? You have to re-install Linux? It sounds like you're quite early in the install, you wouldn't loose much.

It should work, but ATI software is very sloppy in Linux. I suggest stick with what comes with Xorg. The truth, nVidia video cards works the best in Linux.

Yes, Mozilla Firefox can be choppy. Try using Opera (static version).

I tried Opera and the same happened and I tried installing the xorg-driver-fglrx package from the repository, but could only get so far. I entered sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg into the terminal and I chose the driver fglrx when asked but couldnt get past the next page which asked about something about powerpc and multihead users, which I didnt understand, but could not go further. Any ideas why?

I don't know why that happened, big, but I can offer this suggestion:

Go to ATI's site and download the installer. Run it from shell. It's a self-installer and immediately after, run aticonfig.

I'm pretty much a noob, and even I got it working with my x800XL. Something like "sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.33.(sumthin-sumthin).run

It 'just worked' for me. I'd imagine they have an installer for the x1900-series cards, too.

EDIT: I think you might wanna run xorgconf before, but I'm using Slackware 11, not Ubuntu.

If you did a fresh install of Ubuntu, it did not install the ATI drivers. I found this out the hard
way. I in fact have an ATI XT1950 running on dual screens. I have yet to turn on the hardware accelration though. What you have to do is download and install the ATI drivers from ATI's site and that will fix you're choppy pages. As far as configuring to get the 3dpart work.. I have yet to get that fixed.. :(

I have a X1950XTX and the "X1900 series" drivers from ATI's web site work fine under CentOS 4 (and IIRC, FC6).

does it work with proper 3d accel? i got the buggers to install but be damned if they would let me run 3d apps - suse 10.2 fc6-7
