Angry ATI Driver

I am running SUSE Linux 10.1 (64bit version). The problem is that the ATI driver I got from the site isn't working well on my computer. (HP m7470 w/ATI Express 200). After the first reboot, everythings work fine, that is untill, you want to exit the X.org server or want to reboot/shut down the computer. The first problem is that the driver freezes, which causes the kernel to freeze. When I shut down the computer (via big blue button on the case), and start it up, I find that my second problem is waiting for me. The X.org Server is truble starting GNOME. And now I can't resize/move windows or have any 3D support (that's why I got the driver). I am wondering if I can fix this problem without having to reformat.

Historically, the ATI proprietary drivers have not worked for 64-bit systems with Xorg versions above 6.8. I have heard that the most recent ones work on Debians AMD64 version ... sort of. My plan is to wait for at least one more release. In the meantime, I'm using the xorg ati drivers with exa acceleration. Not good enough for gaming, but I don't do that anyway. Plenty good for videos and production work.

Is there any why of getting the driver to work in the 64bit version of Linux Because overnight I spent about 2 hours uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the X11 Server. Now I'm trying to repair GNOME becuase it will not load the way it should. (ex. icons are now kde w/ the menu but the panel is GNOME). Right now I'm using the 2D generic driver from the SUSE CD.
