ATI & vVidia Drivers and FC5 Woes
Hey guys,
I'm still relatively new to Linux and have some hardware questions. I can't seem to get some device drivers for some hardware to work on my FC5 (i386 on 64bit processor - - for increased compatibility reasons)
First, I have a RADEON X1600PRO that needs ATI graphics drivers. Unfortunately, the stock ATI fglrx drivers do not work in FC5 for some odd reason (black screen). I'm using VESA stock drivers right now, and the current FPS for some graphics programs can drop to less than 1FPS! I'm not a Linux gamer and really don't need games, but I just want a driver that can unleash the potential hidden right now in my video card. Any hints?
Second, I have a motherboard with the new nForce4 chipset. As of now, I use onboard audio and ethernet. The latter works without a glitch using stock drivers, but the audio quality is unspeakably bad using those stock drivers. I tried to install the nVidia drivers, but the install program requires the kernel-source module (of which I have installed recently). So basically I can't get the install program to install the necessary drivers.
I know these two questions have been asked to death online, but forgive a n00b trying to give Linux a chance. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me.

A must read thread before installing ATI drivers. As a last resort, look at the ATI site.
I don't know how to help you with your audio problem even though I'm running FC5 and I think I have the same chipset. Sorry if I'm not much help. Good luck.

From Stanton Finley's installation notes:
Quote:
If you are using an ATI video card or chipset type the following in the root terminal:
yum -y --enablerepo livna install kmod-fglrx

Full instructions:
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...es.html#nVidia (also for ATI).

Give some more info on what you did and what went wrong (and do include the exact error messages).

I got the ATI drivers working. The fglrx is recognized by FC5, albeit I have to hit ALT+CTRL+F7 everytime I start my computer.
The sound for some reason works nicely now. If I have any questions, I'll give you guys a heads-up. Thanks for your help!
