ATI AND nVidia proprietary in same machine?

I was wondering (couldn't find it anywhere) if I could use the proprietary drivers from ATI and nVidia in the same machine for a dual head setup:
nVidia NV6 (Vanta\Vanta LT 16MB) AGP 4x - Dell Ultrascan P990

ATI Rage 128 SE/RG 16MB PCI - Gateway Vivitron 17in (CPD-GF250T)

Sorry, thi is gonna be huge...I've been poking around on the internet trying to find a solution...only the secondary monitor is working in linux (Kubuntu feisty, 2.6.20-16) (x.org 11 v 70,200,000. Crazy newbie...

So I understand that I've made a couple of changes but most of this information came from the systemsettings.py module in guidance...I was able to research that much...I made a couple of changes...but as far as I knew I just commented out a couple things...and added one line that i later commented out for the r128 drivers...

Immediately after running the (kubuntu menu items to follow) system settings -> monitor and display, I made the necessary additions so I could see both monitors...Worked (almost) out ok...I could see both monitors...but the resolution on my primary (dell) was way off...It was doing some sort of panning thing...I know what modes the monitor can handle (I dl'ed the pdf and studied it) and I'm not sure what I need to do to get it to look right...

So, after I installed the nvidia drivers (I wanted a good res 1280x1024@75-85hz) it didn't change anything...
Then I changed the line in xorg.conf for the ati card "driver "ati""
to "driver "r128"" and the system came back with only the ati screen...

I have no idea what to do...I'm seriously thinking about uninstalling and going with xubuntu and just import my xorg.conf settings and dl any soft I actually want to use...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

And to the first question...Can I use both proprietary drivers at the same time...to get the best performance or are they mutualy exclusive?

Thank you...
