ATI 9600 with SuSE (3D)
 

I know I have seen plenty of these posts on here, and I have browsed through a lot of them, but here goes...

I am having a problem with getting my ATI Radeon 9600 (RV350 AQ) working with SuSE 9.2. Following post 308315, I downloaded the 8.10.19 drivers from the suse ftp site, followed the instructions from the post, everything went perfect while in init 3 (ie, I didn't get one error), but after rebooting, going in init 5, and starting KDE, I didn't get 3D. I ran glxgears, and my FPS is around 220. The only thing that has changed, that I have noticed, is in the YaST2 video configuration window, next to my video card, it no longer says "(radeon)", it now says "(fglrx)." Does anyone else have the same problem that I might have, or can someone help me? All I want to do is get this video card working with 3D until I can get back to the states and buy nvidia. (I am in the Navy and deployed right now) Thank you for any support.

I am using Gentoo, but I *USED* to use SuSE9.0Pro, and I never got video things right in SuSE, which is a *large* part of why I changed.

That said...

In G, I found that I had to re-compile/install the fglrx stuff (approximately) every time I re-compile the kernel -- after booting into the new kernel. The way this is done in G is not the same as it is done in S (nor nothing else, neither! ;) ).

(BTW, usually around 1700 fps KDE w/AMD XP2700+ currently running as a 2100+; gentoo-compiles issue work-around: slowed whole computer down by ~28% for now.)

But, one thing I did notice is that the install process does not always put the fglrx module into the "every-boot" stuff, giving the problem you described.

I think what you need to do is to find the fglrx *module*, and the S way to force it to be loaded every time you boot -- it worked once, so it works (duh!), but only once, so this is what it looks like... There may be a folder that it *has* to be in, or there may be a config-file that has to have this added into it. Or both. Or something else entirely that I never found...*Sigh!*

Like I said, I never got *my* ATI-AIW-9600 working under S. And Gentoo is emphatically *not*for anything less than a *powerful* linux/computer tinkerer.

Just download both Suse RPMs from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/suse/i386/suppleme...fglrx/8.12.10/
(if you have a 32 bit computer, if 64 bit computer/system then change the second i386 to x86_64)
and follow exactly all the steps described in the README.

I downloaded the new files, and followed the instructions and, it didn't work.... at first. I tried something new though, I used the "External AGPGART" since I have an AGP video card, and it worked great. I guess you shouldn't ALWAYS follow the instructions. ;-). Thank you very much for the support though, and I have the latest FGLRX video drivers.

Hmm, don't know. Both external and internal agpgart worked for me, but external is slightly faster. Glad it worked for you though.
Maybe you'll wish to enable Xv overlay to get better video performance with xine/mplayer.
