Unhappy ATI 9600(again). Drivers in, but no HW accel

Very close to success with my Radeon 9600 and Gentoo. The drivers are in quite easily, X starts, and all is good, barring 3D. Which is awful, and obviously things are not right. Here's a huge amount of text covering lot's of things you might ask me for:

so can you help me? Be aware that I have to go home to come back to uni if you want more info on my system ;p (hence the data dump...)

Note, I never installed Mesa at all! Mesa is not installed! so where ffglrxinfo gets mesa from I do not know.

I wonder if you got the fglrx kernel module loaded? Open a console and do an 'lsmod' command - you should see both agpgart and fglrx modules loaded. The 'used by' value
for both should be non-zero. If you don't see the fglrx module, exit out of X windows and do a 'modprobe fglrx' command, the restart X and run the glxinfo info stuff again.

Seems to be in the AGPGART driver

I've been helping a friend with a similar problem.

I think we've narrowed down the problem to AGP support for his nforce2 motherboard. Installing the nforce2 rpm from nvidia gives support for the network and sound, but you have to recompile the kernel to get full AGP support.

Problem is, the patch they provide seems to be designed for the 2.4.20 kernel, and not anything else. Using the stock 2.4.20-6 kernel that comes with Redhat 9.0, I can't seem to get it to compile.

I keep getting an error in agpgart_be.c:4347, function: nvidia_generic_setup, - structure has no member named 'num_of_masks'.

I don't think your X config is wrong, I think you're kernel isn't supporting the AGP.

Now, how to get it to compile without going back to a stock 2.4.20...

I've just compiled it now. I added an

unsigned long num_of_masks;

to the struct agp_bridge_data in the file
"/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/char/agpagp.h".

I've just recompiled the kernel without any errors
(though with lots of warning). I've just done a
make modules, and make modules_install, and
they work, but it will be a bit more time before I
can check how well the new kernel will work.

Cheers,

Ross-c

The ATI Radeon9700 drivers are out for XFree86. Go to:

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/l...=11&submit.y=7

Version 3.2.8

From ATI:

Before you start, please read these installation tips.

If you are not sure which version of XFree86 you have installed, please download and run Check.sh from a command line to find out.

Installing a new driver is only recommended if you are having issues with your ATI product, including those mentioned in the "Fixed in this driver".

Hope this helps.

I was parsing all of your entries and it looks to me like someone wrote some bad lines of script or it is waiting for you to invoke some sort of advanced configuration program.

The options are defined, but not chosen anywhere. Either you have to look up all of those options which are in the config file and set them yourself or somewhere in your docs there is mention of some sort of "set-up" program which will help you do it. (You can't have both options at the same time--I could be very wrong.) Even in the logs, you are shown the options--all of them. I don't get it. The logs should record only the settings and options which have been set, AFAIK.

Looking at that xf86config--4 file I don't see how you are getting any video at all. (It said it was auto-generated by the config program for the driver.)

The configuration program didn't.

[[[I just read the readme from the ATI site. It is quite comprehensive. It should solve any problems you have.]]]]]

In /etc/modules.conf just add (as root) :

options agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1

(Assuming that agpgart is loaded, obviously).
Try "modprobe agpgart" to see that.

Should run fine then.
Cheers !
