ATI 9250 card - feedback

Hi gyus. I have been running a trusty Matrox G450 card under Linux for 5 years or so now, happy witht he 2D performance however 3D is not good.

I have seen a Saphire card with ATI 9250 chipset/256M going cheap and thought why not. I did a little Google to see if this chipset is supported under FC4/xorg and it looks good.

Anyone here running a similar card under Linux? What do you think of these cards? What sort of results are you getitng with glxgears? Are you running xinerama ok with 2 x analog monitors?

I have an ATI Radeon 9250, but i haven't had much luck with it. I'm not saying it won't work only that with my very limited experience i haven't managed to make it work. I don't really play any games that require it right now so it's not a big deal to me. Maybe i'll get motivated and try again someday.

I've used both ATI (Radeon 9700) and Nvidia (FX 5500) cards, and at least in my experience, on a scale from one (easiest) to ten (hardest), the driver installation process for Nvidia was maybe a 2, while the ATI process was maybe a 9. YMMV, and I was not using Fedora so I cannot comment on how well it supports this card.

I'd suggest searching LQ for more threads about the ATI and Nvidia driver installation process -- it may be useful in giving you a better picture about what others folks' experiences have been. In any case, good luck with the upgrade, whichever decision you make -- J.W.
