ATI 9200 and the 2.6.X kernels

Hello All,

I have run Little Billy Gates out of my house and office and now I am trying to learn the alternative. It has been an interesting experience. I may be bumbling and stumbling thru Linux, but netsky and bagle are no longer on my worry list. However, getting a gui on a couple of my distro's are.

I am currently running Xandros as my hda system and conectiva as my hdb. It worked fine until I did a "smart" update. Pretty much updated everything updateable. Now when I boot into Conectiva, I get a rather pretty text login. My diminished understanding of the command line prompted me to #startx. What resulted was two pages of complaints from a number of config files in etc. I do not know enough about the text based system to know how to copy and print what I am seeing. That would probably go a long way in letting you guys help huh? Anyway, if someone has the time to help out a noob, I would appreciate it. Have to go to work this morning but will be back this evening and see if I (we) can get it figured out.

thanx

helios

Assuming your using bash shell ("echo $SHELL"), try:
startx > startx.errors 2>&1
and see if you have a new file "startx.errors". This could probably get you something to post to the page.

thanks slided-rule

I did as you said, and this is what I got. I am sorry for the long post, but I did not know which parts were unimportant enough to leave out so I erred on the side of caution. Hope your eyes dont glaze over. Here is the report generated by the commands you dictated:

Bleh, that one's beyond me; hopefully you'll attract someone else with the error log dump. Anyway, something to throw at google would involve XFree86 and the strings "no devices detected" and/or "no screens found", together with "radeon 9200". Looks like from google there is some trouble getting this to work under recent X versions, but people swear with tweaks to the X config file they can get it. Beyond that, sorry.

What ATI video card do you have and do you have the busID line in your X config file?

What version of X and what version of Linux are you using?

Thanks,

YeeHaa

You know, I completely lost track of this thread right after I posted the question. Long story short, I pitched the ati 92-- thru the local compUSA front glass window and went to fry's and bought an NVIDIA.

No really...I put a 90 mile an hour slider right thru the door glass, LOL

Also "ran the bases" in 12 seconds.

A belated but sincere thank you for your answer. OH...a few things have changed in the past 2 years. Come by my site and take a look. no pRon or sales...Just linux stuff.
