Unhappy ATI 6850 Sapphire drivers & Debian

I am new to linux have trouble installing drivers for my ATI 6850 Sapphire on Debian.
I tried proprietary drivers from AMD site but they don't seem to support either my card or distro (Had to uninstall because it REALLY slows down drawing). Also tried fglrx-driver from debian repository, but it doesnt seem to help. 2D OpenGL games are still rendered incorrectly ( lots of weird artifacts and whole screen is pink... )

Help?

I don't use Debian, but the drivers from AMDs site definitely work with that GPU, and should work with any up-to-date linux distribution. The same is very likely true of the fglrx-driver in the debian repos. We'd really need to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated when using the fglrx driver to see what's going on.

First, you're clearly not specifying the fglrx driver in your xorg.conf file. Second, if this is a laptop with hybrid graphics, and if there's no way to disable the intel GPU, you may be stuck simply using the intel GPU. Some people have reported getting that setup working with fglrx, but it seems not to work for most people.

If it's not a laptop, it's probably not necessary to disable it, then. I'm assuming that when the computer boots up, everything displays on a monitor connected to the HD6850?

So now create an xorg.conf file that specifies the fglrx driver, and see if that works: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring

Have you read the output on the screen when installing the fglrx-driver. It clearly states that you have to run
Code:
aticonfig --inital
to create a configuration file. Your log shows that you have omitted that crucial step.

Wait, which version of the drivers have you installed? The one from AMD or the one from the repositories? The one from the repositories is to old to know your video-chip, you need the one from AMD.

I had one from debian repository...
I just ran apt-get remove fglrx-driver but can't install one from AMD, it says there are old drivers installed...

fglrx-driver is dependent on some other fglrx packages. Those packages will be automatically installed when installing fglrx-driver. You can manually uninstall them, the package names are : fglrx-glx, fglrx-modules-dkms, fglrx-source, fglrx-glx and fglrx-atieventsd. After you have uninstalled the old drivers try to install the ones from AMD.
