Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

ATI 4870x2 + 2 monitors + 1 desktop

I have tried for days to find a way to setup my ATI 4870x2 with two monitors, where I have one desktop (not stretched) so that each monitor displays on of the six virtual desktops (multiple desktop applet).

I know I got this to work like this before but it's a long time (KDE 3.4 I think), and now trying to do this with KDE 4.2.2.

This is my current xorg.conf:
Quote:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]" 0 0
Screen 1 "aticonfig-Screen[1]" RightOf "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "off"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[1]"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]"
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[1]"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]"
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[1]"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
With this config file I managed to get direct rendering (checked with glxinfo) but my monitors are cloned. Only need to get the right monitor to be able to display one of the other virtual desktops. I don't think Xinerama is the way to go either because then it's only one taskbar available. I also managed get the monitors to display two separate desktop which did not share/work on the same desktop area, as if there where two different X-session active.

I have tried several times to get it right but so far without luck, please help.

Thanks in advance
