ati 3d accelation not working on debian squeeze (tried everything on google)

Hi guys,

i have a real problem and i´m wondering if anybody could help me out ;)

So my system is Debian Squeeze, newest version and my graphics card is ati mobility radeon HD4300.

I´ve installed the newsest official propetary driver from ati, but opengl is not working, in the catalyst control center in the opengl section there are no values, its just empty.

I also experimented a lot with my xorg.conf and installed all packages i could find regarding this like mesa etc. and also have no old dirvers.

The output of glxinfo, glxgears and fglrxinfo is:

Code:

X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  136 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
  Serial number of failed request:  18
  Current serial number in output stream:  18

Even with all Topics regarding this in Google, I had no success.

So if it helps my xorg.conf (unchanged and newly generated by the ati-driver):

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier    "aticonfig Layout"
        Screen      0  "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier  "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        Option      "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
        Option      "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
        Option      "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver      "fglrx"
        Option      "OpenGLOverlay" "on"
        BusID      "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
        Device    "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Monitor    "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport  0 0
                Depth    24
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I hope someone can imagine what else i could do...

The newest driver for ATI-cards is already in the repositories. Add the contrib and non-free sections to your sources list, then do this:
Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install fglrx-control
aticonfig --initial

Then reboot.
Works on my laptop every time.

Thank you both for answering,

@TobiSGD I heard about that driver, but does it support full OpenGL like the official driver from the website and does it work with kde4?

@adamk75 heres my Xorg.0.log:

Thank you both for answering,

@TobiSGD I heard about that driver, but does it support full OpenGL like the official driver from the website and does it work with kde4?

It supports up to OpenGL 2.1 (if it's new enough), and it works fine with KDE4. It's not as fast at 3D as the proprietary driver.

@adamk75 heres my Xorg.0.log:

Code:

(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized.
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed                              *
(WW) fglrx(0): * kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be missing or incompatible *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D and 3D acceleration disabled                        *
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************************

Sounds like the kernel module never got built. What's the output of:

Code:

$ lsmod | grep fglrx
$ dmesg | grep fglrx
$ find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ -iname fglrx.ko

How can it be not as fast as the proprietary driver? It is actually the proprietary driver, packaged for Debian.

If the kernelmodul is not built (never had that before), make that you have build-essential, your kernelheaders and dkms installed.

My apologies, I was wrong. I didn't really ready your post, just assumed you and tuxxxxx were discussing the open source driver. It's late, I'm tired :-) Sorry again.

So Guys big Thanks to you both, it is working now!

The Package dkms was really missing the other 2 were installed...

Just after installing dkms, reinstalling the propetary driver from ati.com and doing atigonfig --initial, OpenGL was installed and worked perfectly!!!

I think you didn't get the point here. There is no use in DKMS if you use the driver from the website. It will only buid and rebuild modules from drivers that are installed with the package manager.
If you really used the driver from the website you will be without X the next time your kernel updates.
