Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Athlon 64 X2

I currently run 64bit Suse 10.0 using an Athlon 64 processor.
My question(s) about a possible upgrade to the Athlon 64 X2...
~ What are peoples experience of the dual core vs. single core?
~ Would an upgrade be worth it?
~ Is a recompile needed?
Hardware really isn't my forte, please go easy
Any suggestions, advice, experience or whatever would be gladly appreciated!

1. If the proc uses the same socket type them your ok (or its a mobo upgrade as well)
2. The more cores the better i would of thought, but it depends on what your using your computer for.
3. You will need to recompile your kernel or at least install a smp version (which you should have on the Suse install disks and can be installed via Yast)

Is there a particular reason you are considering the change? I've got the same processor and am just kind of curious as to why you're thinking of switching.

As okmyx mentioned, you'll need to enable SMP, and you'll need to confirm that your BIOS can handle the dual core. Here's a relevant discussion on dual cores on a FreeBSD forum, with post #7 being key
