atapi or floppy?

i've got this sony cdrom with a memory stick slot built in
the memory stick itself appears to the computer however as a separate device on hdd
when the computer boots it says something about not knowing whether or not it is a
floppy device or ATAPI, then goes on to say it assumes its a floppy
which is wrong, it is an atapi device
so my queastion is this
How do i tell the kernel it is in fact aa ATAPI device?
kernel boot parameter, dev/hdd=ATAPI, perhaps?
