ATAPI cdrom fails on certain mediums?

i've been pulling my hair out for the last few hours.

dmesg:
Code:
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hdd: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 1536kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
i just received an audio cd (emma shapplin's eterna ) that doesn't play in my cdrom drive, in fact, you can't do anything when it's in my cdrom drive.

sys.log:
Code:
Jun 22 06:24:19 localhost kernel: ide-cd: cmd 0x25 timed out
Jun 22 06:24:19 localhost kernel: hdd: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jun 22 06:24:19 localhost kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jun 22 06:24:19 localhost kernel: hdd: ATAPI reset complete
^ that is what happens when you try to play the cd, or when you try to use hdparm to check settings. it just hangs, repeating those messages in my log. if i pop out the cd during this loop, the command goes through fine and the appropriate output is displayed

hdparm -I /dev/hdd:
Code:
ATAPI CD-ROM, with removable media

 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
 AdvancedPM=no
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified:  ATA/ATAPI-5

 * signifies the current active mode
the odd thing is, it only happens with this audio cd. any data cd i put in there works fine.

is there something with copyright protection not letting my cdrom initially settle on the cd? is there a workaround for this? am i missing something completely

any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

i thought maybe switching from kernel config ide-cd to ide-scsi emulation would do the trick somehow, but no go
