I recently burned the Arch Linux 0.5 base disk. I tested it out on one of my computers, it booted. Hooray. Now I move to put in my toy computer (it's not a Fischer-Price, it's a real computer, I just play on this one) but it doesn't boot. I recently aquired this from a generous friend, so I don't know much about it. As far as I can see (from booting and from the Gateway website) there is no place where I can edit the BIOS settings. So much for Basic Input . Now it boots the Debian 'Woody' cd just fine, it boots the Windows 98se just fine, but it does not boot the Arch Linux one. The reason I don't post this in the Arch forum is that the CD does boot.
It's a Gateway Socket 378 Pentium III 733MhZ. If anybody can help me out on this thanks. If not, that's okay, I got this computer for free. :d
Hi,
The last time I posted anything in a thread about Arch, I got such a chewing out from Sarah31 that it was pitiful. Lovely person, but quick to flare.
You should really have posted this in the Arch forum because they love these kinds of problems.
Arch linux is an i686-optimized linux distribution.
I do not remember if it would boot or not, but I could not get it to work on i586. You might make sure that your machine has the i686 arch.
If you've already checked this, feel free to chew away.
EDIT: My kid just told me that only a fool would think your hardware could be anything but i686. I am so ashamed. Sorry.
Distribution: RH 6.2, Gen2, Knoppix, arch, bodhi, studio, suse, mint

incompatibilities happen. you'll probably need a custom
boot floppy set. It's probably not worth the trouble.
or you could install it on a different computer, then
move the hard drive over.
yea. put the hard drive from the gateway in your good
machine. unhook the other hard drive. install.
move the harddrive back to the gateway. it it boots,
you can reconfigure stuff.
