Asustek nforce2 Ethernet Controller
 

I am trying to get my Rio Karma (which I just purchased) to work under Linux. I have connected the ethernet cable to my PC, but it doesn't work. I think I need a driver for the Asustek nforce2 ethernet controller - because this isn't listed under the list of network cards and when booting up the pc the ethernet is not connecting.

Please can you help a newbie.

Distribution: SuSe 9.0 (soon to be SuSe 9.1 - I don't know if this will make a difference?)

You need to load a driver module for your NIC. The onboard nForce2 Ethernet controller is supported either by the drivers available from www.nvidia.com or by using the in-kernel ForcedEth driver in 2.6.3 and later kernels. Since you're running SuSE 9 the latter is most likely not an option without rebuilding the kernel, so head on over to Nvidia and download the driver and read the instructions carefully.

Thanks for your rapid response.

I installed NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.suse90.i586.rpm as this was what I thought I should install.

What do I do now? It says in the readme that "This patch only supports kernel 2.4.20" and I have kernel linux-2.4.21-215 will this make a difference?

If they don't have a precompiled driver for the kernel version you are using you will have to do this the traditional way - which often is even easier than using precompiled packages.

Download the "kernel tar file" from the NVidia Linux driver page, unpack it and thoroughly read the instructions. I have used them a couple of times on my NF7-Sr2 (also an nForce2-based board) without any problems. You will have to have a fully functional development environment (gcc and so on) and also the kernel source package that matches your kernel, and I believe this could be that package.

I really don't know. I think Nvidia has a package for 9.1 so probably not, but since the driver is dependent on the exact version of the kernel you may run into compatibility problems if you upgrade your kernel. If that is the case you will have to resort to installing it from the tarball rather than using the precompiled rpm package.

Actually I installed SuSe 9.1 and then the ethernet driver was recognised. Anyway thanks for your help.:newbie: :Pengy:
