ASUS Z71V running Suse Linux 9.3 won't drive VGA external monitor

I have a new ASUS Z71V on which SuSE 9.3 in installed. I'm trying to drive an external monitor via the VGA port on the back of the laptop. The monitor doesn't get any signal from the laptop. It acts as if the computer is sleeping.

I've tried multiple monitors (which work perfectly with other computers) so I'm sure it's not the monitor. I tried switching the cables as well to cables which are working with other monitors to make sure it's not that. I'm not even trying to run in different resolutions or multihead mode. I'd just like what is displayed on the laptop screen to be mirrored on the large external monitor. What I'm seeing is that no signal at all is coming into the monitor -- the monitor thinks that the computer driving it is sleeping. It would be one thing if I got some picture -- then I'd know it was just a config issue with sax or yast and the corresponding resolution.

I have seen many postings of people having problems with linux and xorg.conf. It seems like those people are at least getting some display, just not a clear one. In my case, I'm seeing nothing at all.

Originally, I wasn't using the nvidia drivers but the ones that came with the Linux release. In that case, I did see a display, but it was hugely magnified. Again, nothing I did to the monitor config (even specifiying the size in mm of the display) made any difference. A few people posted the suggestion to switch to the nvidia drivers, so I did that.

Here is the relevant config info:

When I do Reprobe from Yast, it says Card: Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 (nv)
Monitor: -> VESA 1024x768@60Hz (28-48kHz/50-60 Hz)
Resolution: 1024x768
Color Depth: 24 bit

3D Acceleration: Disabled

I am running the latest nvidia drivers (xorg-x11-server-glx 6.8.2-30). I see an nvidia splash screen when I start up the computer so I'm pretty sure they are loaded successfully. The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show any errors.

I know that the Monitor config info isn't correct for my external monitor, but I have tried giving it the correct information and nothing made any difference. It still thinks my computer is sleeping. I've tried rebooting with the monitor connected and connecting the cable after the computer is already running (this was suggested in another posting). I've tried the Fcn-F8 button to change what is being driven by the laptop, but that doesn't seem to do anything at all either.

ASUS disclaims all Linux support.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks! The crux of the problem was changing "nv" to "nvidia" in the xorg.conf.

For some reason my touchpad started acting up after changing to the sax2 laptop profile (see above link). If your touch pad starts acting strangely I fixed this by installing a touchpad driver in yast. If it is not in the default server I know it is on the packman server (the one used to fix DVD playback).

Oh the driver settings shows up in the config tool under peripheral devices or something like that. I turned off horizontal scrolling and changed the middle mouse click to right mouse. That made the wierdness go away.
