ASUS P4V8X-X Motherboard and ACPI problems........?
 
I'm having a problem, well not really a "PROBLEM", that is bugging me to death. Currently, I'm dual booting Windows XP Professional and Mandriva 2009. Before I can boot from Windows back to Mandriva Linux, I have to enter my BIOS and disable ACPI. Then, to go back to Windows, I have to enter the BIOS again and re-enable ACPI. If I don't do this, neither OS will boot. My question is, how can I leave ACPI enabled, permanently, and STILL boot into Mandriva 2009? Is this possible?

You need to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and make the following change:

acpi=off <--add this to the end of the kernel boot line.

This didn't work??? Any other ideas? I tried "acpi=off" as well as "apci=off" at the bottom of the file. Neither made any difference.

Just for my knowledge, can you define "kernel boot line"? Sorry, I'm obviously very "green" with Linux.

This is what the line looks like:

kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=b8701dfe-c3ae-47b8-9638-9a03710cb3ea resume=UUID=85f6479e-53be-4ecd-99a2-16c44c3bec51 splash=silent vga=788 acpi=off <--this is where you add this parameter.

I actually have three lines of "kernel" text in that file....."title linux".... "title linux-nonfb"....and "title failsafe". Do I need to include the "acpi=off" at the end of each kernel line, or just the one you mentioned? Glad I asked that question. I put it in the wrong place...... duh!! ..... I feel stupid now.

Fantastic!!!!!!! If I could thank you 400 times I'd certainly do it!!!! You just saved me a LOT of headaches sir. Works like a charm. Now, if I could get the bugs out of this ATI video card, I'd be flying high for sure. Thank you again and again !!!

Glad to have helped. If you make a separate post for the ATI problem, we'll try and resolve that as well. :)
