i could trace back the problem why my software RAID doesn't work any more now:

apparently a linux software RAID has its header at the end of a disk, not at the beginning... and it seems the opensource driver gives you a different disk size (64KB more at the end)!
which, of course, causes mdadm and the md driver not to find a valid header.
i'll notify the kernel guys about this issue.
