Asus a7n266-vm/lan/aa: Problem with onboard lan
 

Hi everybody!

I'm busy getting RH8 to work on my new Asus a7n266 with XP1700. I was running it on a Celeron (300mhz!) processor, and the installation on that computer went without a hitch. After replacing that mobo with the Asus I went for the install again, and had much more problems. First, my display wasn't working, so I used the text mode install. It was complaining it couldn't probe my display. With a lot of help from membrax (post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...383#post200383) I got it going. THANK YOU!
The LAN is still giving me problems though. Normally when I attach the cable that goes to my router to the LAN card, the lights on the router light up. Not when I attach it to the port on the Asus :confused: So I installed the lan card from the old PC, and got that one to work. I still want to get the onboard lan to work though. It does show up in the hardware list and when I do lspci... Also, I did install the nvnet driver from nvidia.
Has anybody else here experience with this mobo? Did you get the onboard lan to work? Does the lan pci card now prohibit the onboard lan from working? What should I look at?

I'm in exactly the same situation as you are, i too get those exact same problems, even with the latest drivers from nvidia...have you found a fix yet? i dont really want to plug in a chunky pci card cos i use the computer in the car

Somehow, and I really don't know why, it all started working. After I had installed those drivers, I was using a network card. Just took it out, connected the onboard lan, and tried again. And all of a sudden it started working... Never figured out why....

i just recomplied my kernel, to realise i used the wrong kernel module so i need to start over, prehaps i will have your luck this time around :)

How about installing redhat9.0?
 

I encountered the same problem.
first you can visit NVIDIA site, you can get new nforce dirver.

In my case I used the same mb. also I had problems with installing redhat 8.0. But I changed redhat 9.0. wonderfully smooth installation with GUI. I checked nforce 2 mx and nforce i80 sound hardware except nvnet.
Thus, I found new nforce driver. NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz.
after installing redhat9.0, you should install this driver package.


This is my installing procedure.

Red Hat 9.0 installation to A7N266-VM (bios version ev 1005)
It is able to install this mb directly except nvnet driver( network dirver ).
After installing redhat. Keep stay no update linux. In this kernel version is 2.4.20-8.

[root@localhost root]#mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy (Mount floppy driver)
[root@localhost root]#cd /mnt/floppy
[root@localhost floppy]#ls –al
NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz

[root@localhost floppy]#tar –xvzf NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz
[root@localhost floppy]#ls –al
nforce NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.src.rpm NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz

[root@localhost floppy]#cd nforce
[root@localhost nforce]#make
[root@localhost nforce]#su
[root@localhost nforce]#make install

Rebooting
You look find “new hardware” in booting sequence.
After boot up and load completely, Redhat give a message to you.

And then you can configure to network. That’s all

i did all you mentioned. i could see the hardware of lan card onboard. but i cannot active it, it just pop up a msg box said
that the hardware is not present.

how can i do?

i had the same problem thtat you have jawhoo, until i installed the tarball version at the very bottom of the page at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261 instead of the .rpm for my distro, which would install nvnet but would say it doesn't seem to be present. worked perfectly afterwards

actually, i reinstalled rh 9.0 right before trying the tarball.
so that mighta helped.
