ASsus DVD-Rom Problem when mounting in gentoo


hi guys,

i have installed gentoo kernel 2.6.5 and i have a cdwriter as hdd and an asus dvd rom as hdc, the problem is that when I try mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom /mnt/dvd I receive /dev/cdroms/cdrom0: Input/output error
mount: block device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 is write-protected, mounting read-only and dmesg gives me :ide-cd: cmd 0x28 timed out
hdc: DMA timeout retry
hdc: timeout waiting for DMA
hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
hdc: status timeout: error=0x00
hdc: drive not ready for command

also i can't boot the live cd on my dvdplayer only the cdwriter works fine, any clues?

Have you tried naming them "/dev/hdc & /dev/hdd"? I have a Lite-On CDRW and a Lite-On DVDRW and had to use this method of naming them to get them to mount correctly.

Sorry, been away from the computer too long.

Anyway, what I meant is mount them by "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/dvd" and "mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrw" and then change your fstab file accordingly.

Judging by all the DMA errors I might venture to guess your drive might not support DMA for some reason. Try using hdparm * think thats it * to turn off DMA for that drive.
