Exclamation Assitance Required

I am using RedHat Enterprise Linux 4, weird experiences

I have 3 machines
Desktop1: Pentium III, 550 Mhz, RAM: SD128, OnBoard Sound
Desktop2: Pentium IV, 2.67 Ghz, RAM: DDR256, OnBoard Sound
Laptop: Compaq Presario V2000, RAM: 256

On Laptop, unless I use "acpi=off", my sound card doesnt get detected, neither "etho" gets UP, but thats no big problem, "acpi=off" is fine for me, Speed/Performance for RHEL4 is awesome

On Desktop1, no changes need to be done for "eth0" or "sound cards", and the systems runs fairly good enuff

But ... on Desktop2, crap! Sound Card doesnt get detected, and the speed in the GUI is damn slow!

I tried using the latest kernel, tried hugemem-kernel, acpi=off, dmesg, absolutely no resolves, asked my RHCE trainer, doesnt know a damn thing!!

Someone plz .... help me out ...

Hello sysinit.d,

Welcome to Linux Questions!

Have you tried installing ALSA?

you just need to download alsa drivers
and then follow the quick install guide.

http://alsa.opensrc.org/Quick+Install

Then if you can hear sound its ok. If not, you may try
visiting http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=TroubleShooting
Which helped me a lot. If you still cant hear sound from
some applications, try changing sound system to alsa from autodetect or install oss emulative alsa and change sound daemon to oss from control center.

Hope, this helps you
