asrock k7s41gx mobo shuts down

K7S41GX mobo
(onboard lan disabled, usb disabled, sound disabled, sis 600 vga)
AMD 2400 @ 2000mhz (actually now at 1500 - temp hovers at 40-50 celtigrade, but has no apparent affect on shutdown)
256mb pc2100 ddr

I have a self built computer with an athlon 2400 which keeps just shutting itself down. I can sit at the bios hardware monitor watching all the little numbers go up and its fine, but as soon as i boot any os, the pc turns itself off, and i have to turn the power off at the wall to restart.

I thought at first it was cpu overheat so got a new better shiny fan, which had no effect. So then i thought it could be a power issue (i was using a 230watt supply) so i bought a new even shiny'er (gold)500w one, but it still keeps shutting itself down. I thought maybey a hardware problem, so removed everything except the floppy disk, same problem. I even removed the floppy drive, but arrgh it still happens. I turned the fsb down to 133mhz and it will boot for a little longer now, but still shuts itself down.

I checked the asrock site an their is a bios update available, but if im flashing the bios and it turns itself off.....scrap metal and plastic, so im not trying that yet.

Not technically a linux question, but hopefully someone may beable to point out what im doing wrong as its driving me crazy.

I've an option for you to try.

lift the PSU up and out of the box and put over the CPU and Northbridge area a decently large fan.

My 2800+ had a stock heat sink and fan. This was replaced via a friend for a Zalman Flower. Great. CPU nice and cool, but the Northbridge temp is going through the roof. I assume that's what the "Temp2" reading is as soon as I put my 120mm fan blowing down onto it the temp drops right down.

Temp1: 33
Temp2: 45
HDD 0: 40

These are in 'c.

The same motherboard with sempron 2000+ (+-) 1648mhz works fine.
Did you put the cpu jumpers right
