arts not working after kernel upgrade

I upgraded my kernel on slackware 10 for 2.4.27 to 2.6.9 (precompiled to own version). As slackware 10 already used alsa I didn't change anything about that.
My problem is that KDE's arts sound daemon isn't playing any sound. Alsa just works, as I can play sound with XMMS (using alsa as output). I also tried this as root, same result.

Could anyone give me a solution or some suggestions to get arts working?

have you checked the mixers channels volume? is there any muted ones ?
