Are wireless keyboard safe to use?

Hi

I am thinking of getting a wireless keyboard to connect to an android tablet. The keyboard will be used only at home.

What concerns me, if I login to web sites with my credentials, can this be picked up with bluetooth scanners?

Thanks

Well, yes it could.

Not sure I'd trust android either.

Secure keyboards are ones that do one or more of a few things. One is they are always hardwired, two is they may change code each time a key is pressed so that someone trying to eavesdrop on the minute signal would be confused. Another may be that they use optical connection to system. All that hardened stuff has layer over layer of signal protection and rf shielding.

I guess I could buy an OTG cable and connect a wired keyboard to it.

You can go VERY far down the paranoia road; however, a bit of logical thinking is needed before you start.
  • Bluetooth has a VERY short range. Do you normally have a crowd of people within 30-40 feet of you, who would be interested in 'hacking' your keyboard?
  • Bluetooth devices like keyboards typically only pair with one device, via the bluetooth 'MAC' address. So, anyone who wanted to snoop would have to know the address of your bluetooth keyboard, and your computer. How likely is that?
  • WHY do you think that people would go through all this trouble to snoop on you? It's far more likely that they could just capture packets going across the Internet and replay them, decode them, or just perform a simple man-in-the-middle attack
Yes, it is TECHNICALLY possible for people to do what you're asking. The better question is, how likely is it? Think about it another way: what you're asking is analogous to asking "Can someone pick the deadbolt lock on my glass front door???" Sure they can, given the right tools, time, and skills...but it's far more likely they'd throw a brick through it, so spending time worrying about the type of lock is pointless.

If someone wants your web traffic, they can get it without bluetooth.

I definitely agree with the above post, but then again, if you are like the rest of us mere mortals, who really cares what you type.

You are more likely to be exposed from people hacking your online shopping provider databases or something like what happened with walmart than someone trying to snoop your typing.

Remember that criminals are not concern about you and just your little card, the go for the big fish where they can get tons of card numbers meaning they have more chance to get away with spending it.

I think you should be more concerned about why you are worried about typing to your android since uncle goofle already owns your device and data on it. I would be more worried about them than what i am typing.

I am not worried nor paranoid of using a wireless keyboard. I do use one occasionally but not entirely. All I wanted to know if people can sniff packets from bluetooth devices.

Anyway, my question was already answered by TBOne

I appreciate the replies and thanks to those who posted their input.

It is still a radio communication and can be caught, eavesdropping equipment does not need to connect to the computer or keyboard. If there is more than one active bluetooth communication then it can get a little bit messy, though.
